Pronghorn
The location of this painting is the area to the east of Red Lodge, Montana, east of the Rockies. Pronghorn are one of the iconic animals of the American West, and are a fascinating subject to paint.

This piece was painted on location at Sylvan Lake in the Black Hills. Dave and I were Artists-In-Residence at Sylvan Lake Lodge for nine years. I generally worked on landscapes on location, while Dave did portraits of the lodge guests.

This cow skull on was on the side of an old wooden barn on a friend's property. I painted this on location - I started late in the summer, so the ivy growing up the stucco behind the skull changed from green to red while I worked.

I prefer to work from life whenever possible. I have learned, over the years, that when painting people from life, it is important to work as quickly as possible, because life has a way of interfering. And so it was with this painting - I worked quickly to render the woman's face, hair, and upper body. And it's a good thing I did, because her husband received a job offer from another state and she could no longer sit for me - she had to ready their home for sale. Thankfully I had gotten the essentials down!

Stockton Island is one of the Apostle Islands in Lake Superior. In this painting, I wanted to show low, scudding clouds and the rocky shoreline wet with spray.

Fox Ridge
This landscape was painted on location, the first and only time I worked on a painting outside in the winter months. It certainly had its challenges!

Still-Life with Red Onion
All of my still-lifes are painted from life. In this painting, I was focused on the light shining on the onion and the jar, and I liked the combination of colors and textures - glass is always a challenge.

This is the second of two paintings I did of a student of mine, who was willing to pose for me. In this painting, I was focused on the effects of sunlight on skin tones.

This still-life was painted from life, using feathers from my own hawk, Dakota, as well as some of his equipment and books from my collection of falconry literature.

Ruffed grouse are very difficult to paint, as there are many subtle changes in feather patterns. It was an immense help to have a taxidermy mount to use for reference.

Black Hills Scene
Dave fell in love with the Black Hills, and we thoroughly enjoyed our many years as Artists-in-Residence there. This scene would have been done from Dave's memory.

Tom was the security guard at Sylvan Lake Lodge for many of the years we were there as Artists-in-Residence. A retired police officer, his great loves were horses and the cowboy lifestyle.

Sylvan Lake Lodge Staff
In addition to doing portrait of Sylvan Lake Lodge guests, Dave often did portraits of the lodge staff, which he did just for fun and for their enjoyment.

Dave had a talent for capturing the essence of an animal, even with a pencil sketch.
